Chapter Fourteen
Veronica
As much as I loved Julie, her over-worrying was starting to get annoying. It may have also been due to the fact that I had still not found a job and that my nerves were shot.
“Give me one minute before we go inside. I want to make sure Johnathan is fine,” Julie said, then pulled out her cell phone.
“He’s all right. Rebecca would have called if anything was wrong.”
“I know, but I just want to make sure,” she said. We had left Johnathan at the house with Rebecca for a few hours so we could come out and shop for a car. And though I was a little worried as well, I knew he was in good hands. But Julie was stressing, having already called her once since we left the house ten minutes ago.
We were at Palomino Autos on a Thursday just after noon to look for a SUV. I was exhausted from the stress of being unemployed. Even though the sun was shining on us, I felt nothing but storm clouds inside of me for the continuous lies to Julie. Lying was not something you should do in marriage, truth was far better. But what if the truth destroyed the others person’s dreams? And if you lied now and told the truth later and kept the dream alive, maybe it would work out just fine in the end.
I had enough savings put to the side in an old purse that I hid in the closet. One thing I had learned in life that cash easily accessible was handy for an emergency. And in this case I had over five thousand dollars put away for a rainy day. It would cover us for almost two months, and if all went well by the time it ran out, I would have new paychecks coming in.
“OK, you have my dad’s number as well?” Julie said into the phone. “Great. I may call in twenty minutes. Oh, and before I forget, there are backup batteries…. Yep, kitchen drawer next to the refrigerator. OK, thanks again, bye.” Then she hung up the phone.
“Everything fine?”
“Yeah. Johnathan is still sleeping. Rebecca has both monitors on just in case one goes out. Well, I told her to do that,” Julie said, a smile on her face.
“That’s good. All right, let’s start looking,” I said, taking her hand. It was a typical car lot with a large office building, a garage built on next to it, and rows and rows of cars with balloons tied to some of them. We came to the first row of vehicles, which were all trucks. Moving past them, the next row were SUVS. Black, white, red and even green, though I couldn't imagine who would want a green one.
The sizes of them were huge, and the price tags had my head spinning. There was no way we could afford one of them even if I was working.
“Hello, ladies, can I help you with anything?” a male voice said. Turning around, a guy around forty stood there, a cheesy smile on his face.
